Volunteering
Volunteer Firefighters
have been the backbone of Rural Fire Departments in America from the
beginning, and Fire District 5 is no exception. The thirty men and women
who volunteer with us are a vital part of our ability to serve the people
living within our district boundaries. If you are interested in becoming a
Volunteer Firefighter or have questions, call Division Chief Darin Welburn
at (541)535-4222.
Requirements
Must be 18 years old, have a valid Oregon
Driver's License, and able to complete a basic physical agility test.
Volunteers are expected to attend at least two evening training drills and
10% of alarms per month. An initial training academy takes place on five
consecutive weekends and completion is mandatory prior to responding to
alarms.
Activities
District 5 Volunteers are active in several
community functions each year, including driving apparatus in local
parades, barbecuing burgers and hotdogs for the public, assisting with
school presentations, and other service and fire prevention
activities.
Students
Limited spaces are available each quarter for
Volunteers wishing to attend college to obtain fire service-related
training. The District will pay part or all of tuition and materials in
return for the student signing a contract agreeing to maintain grades of
"C" or better and to be assigned to a shift at Station One, where the
student will work on duty when not at class or employment. Call Division
Chief Darin Welburn if you are interested in this program.
