District
History
Jackson County
Fire District 5 was
encorporated as a volunteer
fire department in 1963 and was originally known as Talent Rural Fire
Protection District. Serving the rural areas of the cities of Talent and
Phoenix, and operating out of one fire station, the fire district
protected approximately 35 square miles and between 500 and 1,000
customers.
In 1968, the
fire district relocated to a newly-built station at 716 South Pacific
Highway in Talent, and also annexed Barron Rural Fire District, located
southeast of Ashland, adding another station at 40 Neil Creek Road,
Ashland. The fire district grew to approximately 65 square miles and
protected approximately 4,500 customers.
By the
mid-1970's, Talent Rural Fire Protection District became known as Jackson
County Fire District 5 and employed 12 career firefighters, along with 25
volunteers. Additional growth milestones for the district include the
annexation of the City of Talent in 1998, completion of a 15,000 square
foot headquarters fire station in 2004, and in 2008 the City of Phoenix
voted to annex to the fire district and a third fire station was staffed
at 116 West Second Street in Phoenix.
Today, the
fire district employs 27 career firefighters, 40 volunteer firefighters,
and has grown to over 115 square miles, providing fire and emergency
medical services to approximately 25,000 customers in the Phoenix, Talent,
and Ashland communities. The fire district operates out of three
strategically-located fire stations and responds to over 2,200 calls for
service each year.
